Summer Refit Volunteers Needed!

S/Y Discovery will be working as a research vessel supporting eXXpediton Round The World, which is an all-female sailing voyage and scientific research mission covering over 38,000nm and 30 legs, starting and ending in the United Kingdom. eXXpedition crews will explore plastics and toxics in our ocean via four of the five oceanic gyres and the Arctic.

S/Y Discovery is a 70ft steel ketch and will be going through a major refit this Spring / Summer in preparation for her departure in October 2019. We will be kitting her up to the highest standard to take on such a challenge and we need your support.

The role will be supporting and working alongside the Skipper doing jobs such as;

This is a great opportunity to get involved with the project, learn and gain experience in essential boat maintenance and learn about the upkeep of coded vessels, you’ll also have the chance to be involved in a number of ‘shake down’ sailing weekends throughout the Summer.

We will also put on a free of charge evening class (10 nights) to gain RYA Day Skipper Theory for those willing to work 10 days or more. Exact dates/location for this course are TBC.

Food and board* Included.

Based in Cowes and Southampton (April - June) and Plymouth (June - October)

*Board included whilst the boat is in the water; please be willing to seek accommodation whilst the boat is on the hard.

Job Role: Volunteer Deckhand

Female Volunteer Deckhand required onboard 70ft Ketch for an all-female sailing expedition circumnavigating the globe, supporting the Skipper, First Mate, Mission Leader and Guest Crew onboard.

The successful candidate will join the professional crew to deliver eXXpedition Round the World. eXXpedition organise all-women sailing trips exploring the impact of plastics and toxics in our ocean.

Duration: Various, see below.

Itinerary:

We require a deckhand for each phase.

One candidate to be deckhand for phase one and phase two preferred.

Phase one: UK to Panama, October 2019 – End of December 2019

Phase two: Panama to Australia, January 2020 – End of June 2020

Phase three: Australia to Cape Town, July 2020 – End of October 2020

Phase four: Cape Town to the Caribbean, November 2020 – End of February 2021

Phase five: Caribbean, via The Arctic, to the UK – March 2021 – End of August 2021

Role description:

This is a key role supporting the Skipper and First Mate throughout the time you are on board.

As an experienced seafarer and competent sailor, you will be responsible for assisting scientists and guest crew with their daily tasks, holding a watch, assisting with daily boat maintenance, and overseeing deck and below deck operations. You will also be expected to take an active role in provisioning, galley management and cooking meals.

This is an unpaid role, but travel expenses, food and accommodation onboard are all included. Any food eaten off the boat or costs of additional on-shore activities or accommodation are not included.

Essential Qualifications;

- Minimum Dayskipper or equivalent

- First Aid

- Powerboat L2

- Full Drivers License

Required Skills and Experience;

- Offshore experience; minimum as Watch Leader, preferably as First Mate

- Experience within sail training

- Navigation and seamanship skills

- Maintenance onboard sailing vessels

- Time management, highly motivated and adaptable

- Positive attitude and great customer service skills

- Leadership, communication and interpersonal skills

- Inventory management

First Mate

Female First Mate required onboard 70ft Ketch for an all-female sailing expedition to circumnavigate the globe, supporting the Skipper, Mission Leader and Guest Crew onboard.

The successful candidate will join the professional crew to deliver eXXpedition Round the World. eXXpedition organise all-women sailing trips exploring the impact of plastics and toxics in our ocean.

Duration: September 2019 - September 2021

Draft itinerary: Departing UK waters in October 2019 - North Atlantic, Panama Canal, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Cape of Good Hope, South Atlantic to the Arctic and returning to the UK in September 2021.

This is a diverse role, primarily supporting the Skipper for the duration of the voyage and refit period. As a professional seafarer and experienced sailor you will be second in command, responsible for facilitating scientists and guest crew with their daily tasks, plus ongoing daily maintenance onboard, overseeing deck operations, leadership and sail training for guest crew onboard.

Essential Qualifications:

- Yachtmaster Offshore with Commercial Endorsement

- Proficiency in Medical Care

- Powerboat L2

- ENG1

- Full Drivers License

Required Skills and Experience:

- Offshore experience, minimum as First Mate; preferably as Skipper

- Experience within sail training, teaching or coaching

- Experience with charter and guest crew

- In-depth knowledge of navigation and phenomenal seamanship skills

- Experience with refits plus ongoing daily maintenance onboard sailing vessels

- Impeccable time management, highly motivated and adaptable

- Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills

- Inventory management
