"Here at Yacht Discovery we love adventure. It's in our DNA. Nothing gives us greater pleasure or satisfaction than spending the day or extended periods of time exploring new bays to anchor in for a relaxing swim or spending three weeks crossing oceans to far flung lands. For us sailing is more of a passion and way of life rather than just a job and we are therefore as excited as you are to be out on the water. As such we have planned an exciting, sometimes challenging program of adventure journeys visiting well-known places, and some places that aren’t as well-known that are off the beaten track.
I will aim to be skippering a lot of the passages myself with experienced 1st and 2nd mates all of our skippers will have extensive sailing experience and have RYA Commercial Yachtmaster as a minimum. On selected trips there will be RYA Instructors on board to help coach and work on any training requirements our crew have this will give. This also means that we will be able to offer structured training and certification where needed.
I wanted to create a business that we helped people realise their dreams of sailing to far away places, whilst at the same time living out my own dream to visit places around the world on a sailing yacht. We also operate a free place system so that our trips really are open to everyone. On board we will have at least three experienced crew so this enables us to offer a much better learning experience and also open the crew up to people with no sailing experience.
As our name suggests life on board is all about discovery, learning, exploring and taking part. We believe that to make a successful sea passage takes teamwork and everyone taking a full part in all aspects of life on a boat. We don’t have passengers, to sail the yacht to its best ability we need everyone on board to take an active role in sailing and running the yacht. It really is a case of all hands on deck and with all the sails there’s always something to do.
We operate Discovery in order to travel to more exciting locations and in more extreme and challenging ocean environments. Closer to home we also operate a fleet of two modern yachts which are based in Cowes with our sister company Venture Sailing which we use for RYA Training in and around the Solent and Isle of Wight. This allows us to provide both novice and experienced sailors with necessary training and qualifications to equip them with the necessary skills, experience, and RYA qualifications be able to sail safely and responsibly. And if you are not sure of your ability to undertake longer voyages, we can also help build your confidence on the water.
Look forward to sailing together,"
Born in Glasgow in 1979 and introduced to sailing on the River Clyde, Andy started his sailing career on the Bow of a Volvo 60 and has been sailing commercially for over 20 years. He has spent most of his career skippering racing yachts, competing in various races including multiple Rolex Fastnet campaigns, Atlantic races and various other offshore and inshore races. He has spent a lot of time cruising around the North Atlantic and also spent two years skippering a privately owned IY60 around the Caribbean and USA. In recent years as an RYA Instructor he has enjoyed passing on his passion for sailing and adventure to his students. He is looking forward to visiting some amazing places, meeting new people and the new challenges that Discovery will bring.
Peter Ward was born on the Isle of Wight and spent most of his life surrounded by water. He has been sailing for over 40 years skippering his own yachts as well as many charter yachts. Pete has sailed extensively around many parts of the world and loves being on the water. Pete is going to be the onboard engineer and responsible for overseeing the refit over the winter and getting Discovery ready for some amazing adventures. When he’s not out on the water he spends his days onboard looking for things to fix. Pete is looking forward to the Discovery refit this winter and cruising around Britain. He really enjoys passing on his knowledge of engines and yacht systems to new crew and is the only person I know that likes it when things break as it gives him a new challenge.
Charlie Harris has sailed for 13 years where he learnt in dinghys in 2011 and decided to do a college course at UKSA. In his spare time he enjoys racing yachts. As our on board bosun he is always on hand to help out, after leaving UKSA as a highly qualified water sports instructor and wanting to chase his dream of working on yachts.
We are always looking for new crew to help out on our voyages. If you have a passion for meeting new people, sailing and visiting new places then get in touch. We will be sailing on passages from one day to 3 weeks so you should have spent time offshore. You will need to have at least RYA Costal Skipper and wanting to work towards your Yachtmaster. We will invest a lot of time and commitment into to you’re development, and will help fill the gap you have in training and knowledge to get you up to a valued member of the team. Drop us an e-mail with a little bit about yourself and any experience and sailing qualifications you have.
